DeAnza Instructor - Patricia Bruegger B.S.B.A, MBA, M.A. Instructional Technology, Three California Teaching Credentials

WELCOME TO FLASH ONLINE!

Hello, and welcome to Flash CS5 Graphic/Animation software. I am very happy you are taking this course as I believe Flash software can be a very valuable tool to creating fantastic animation within web-pages. I hope you leave this course having a greater understanding of the capabilities of Flash, along with a sense of accomplishment. If you need to contact me, the best way is to email me at brueggerpatricia@fhda.edu I check this email account several times a day. You can also reach me by emailing me through the online class once you log in. Please allow 48 hours for me to reply to your email. If you feel you need to talk to me in person, please contact me prior (email) to assure our meeting time. Please note this online class has no class meetings so thoroughly reading the syllabus will help you have a successful start to an excellent class.

What is Flash CS5
Flash CS5 is professional standard software, used in industry, to produce high-impact web pages. Hi-impact is another term for extremely impressive. Flash CS5 has become much more user friendly than previous versions, and will allow you, as a web designer, to create animated pages. This course will teach you how to understand your way around the software tools, use graphics and text, use symbols and instances, use sound, create animation, use basic interactivity, use action scripts, publish and export your Flash work.

The class is located at http://catalyst.deanza.edu
The successful approach to this course is to read and complete chapter work,
online assignments, read lecture notes, and to continually use Flash commands by practicing and building
Flash projects. The layout of the course is such that if you follow along with the due dates and complete
assignments the instructor has given, you will be proficient in Flash software. Do not allow yourself to get behind or simply not read or
complete the chapter work. If for any reason you do get behind
let the instructor know immediately so arrangements can be made.
I strongly recommend you work ahead of schedule if at all possible. I believe between
my lectures notes, chapter readings and chapter work, and hands on training, along with projects,
you will have a valuable Flash education.

How do you send me your online work? By creating a Server account...
You will need to set up an account on the DeAnza server, or any free server such as www.110mb.com to post your work. It is recommended you create a simple web page and insert your .swf files for grading. Or you can send me the URL root and I can view your chapter files. Please make sure the chapter work is in its own folder respectively. I.e. Chapter 1 work is in a folder called chapter 1,etc.

Once the free server account has been created, you will be posting your completed chapter work,
hands on training exercises and projects. Make sure you post the .swf files only. What are .swf files? Whenever you create anything in Flash is it a .fla file. When you press control+enter to view your work, the software automatically creates a .swf file. It is saved in the same location as your .fla file. Please turn in .swf files only. If for any
reason I need to view the .fla files I will request those from you. Please keep your files clean and organized. Again,
I recommend a web-page were you insert your .swf files instead of just the default file directory. However, the option is yours.

For many reasons(primarily viruses), I will not download your work to grade. It must be posted in a place I can click and view. Again,
a personal web site, or to your server at work, or create a free site and just mentioned. This is an important requirement for this class.

Course Requirements
This course is a Flash CS5 course, we will not use older software. You can find free trial versions of CS5 by searching online. Be prepared to spend at least 5-7 hours per week using and studying Flash software, course materials and participating in online activities. The course work includes chapter assignments, completing additional assignments the instructor gives, creating three comprehensive projects. The Flash plug-in is necessary to view Flash. If you can't see Flash, go to http://www.adobe.com and download the latest Flash Player.
Active class participation will be completing your assignment by the due date.

Drop Policy
Students may be dropped from the class if they not been active in the class for more than two weeks.
Because the class software tracks each students login and activity, non participants may be dropped.
Regarding students who wish to drop themselves from the class....
From Schedule of Courses, Page 4: "It is not the responsibility of the instructor to drop a student. The student must officially drop classes in which s/he no longer wishes to be enrolled."

Academic Honesty
Academic honesty and integrity is expected from each student. Cheating and plagiarism will result in
the student receiving a failing grade.

EMAIL
Students are required to have email and Internet access for the class. Students must make sure they receive my class emails by verifying their mailboxes are not full. Also, students must make sure my class emails are not accidentally going into the Junk Mail file. It is the students responsibility to assure email authenticity on their end.

Software for the class…
You can take the class without buying the software if you're flexible. Here are your options.
1. Google "Flash CS5 Trial Version" and you will find many links. Download the trial version and use this for 30 days. Then you can download another trial version on a different computer for another 30days and use the ATC computer lab to finish the class. Flash is on all the computers in the ATC lab at Deanza.
2. DO NOT DOWNLOAD YOUR TRIAL VERSION UNTIL YOU GET THE BOOK
AND YOU'RE READY TO BEGIN. THE 30 DAYS BEGINS WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE.
3. If you plan on using Flash in the future consider buying it. There are several web sites that offer discounts for students.
4. You will need to download the latest Flash Player (free) - www.adobe.com

Hardware requirements/Technology
Hardware requirements: The minimum RAM is 258MB. Your computer should have at least 233 MHZ processor. This is so very important because if you do not have enough RAM, your computer will freeze or lock up in the middle of your work. And you usually have to shut down and restart if this happens, which results in you losing the work you've been working on. I would prefer everyone to have at least 256 MB or more, or RAM, 233 MHZ processor. You will need Internet access a browser is compatible with the https//catalyst.deanza.edu
Also, you must have the ability to send and receive email.

Textbook and materials:
Book is required as you will be turning in work.
